Wowza Media Server with Amazon EC2 Basics

Wowza-logo Wowza Media Server provides a way to live stream your video content. It does other things (stream VOD content as well, but we use it for live video). You can purchase the software and run it on your own server, or they provide a way to use Amazon’s EC2 server, which can be a very cost effective way to stream your content.

The cost effective way to do this is to use a spot instance of Amazon EC2 each week, only running the server during your service, and then terminating the server. You can setup the server manually each week, or run an automated script. Wowza provides pre-built AMI (Amazon Machine Images), so the process is pretty simple.

1. Sign-up for an Amazon account through this webpage

2. Select your AMI from this webpage

3. Launch an Instance through the Amazon EC2 dashboard
The first time you need to setup a security group, a key pair and an elastic IP if you want one. An elastic IP allows you to keep the same IP for your server each time, and there is a very minimal cost to it (under $3/month). You assign your IP each time you start a new server.

Now your ready to stream your content to your server.
